Yes, they are behind the scenes and on stage too, how do they make it happen!

Frank W. Malloy III, Co-Founder and Executive Director

Frank is responsible for the companies administrative activities; his interest in African music and dance began in Ghana, where he served in the Peace Corps for two years. He married Sandella while there, and they formed Harambee in Charleston, South Carolina soon after returning. Frank created the curriculum for the African dance class at the College of Charleston and was the adjunct instructor for two years before moving to New York in 1996. he is also one of the company’s musicians and is an accomplished performer on many types of African drums, balafon, and flute. Frank is the producer and host of a weekly cable television show, Dance New York, a show which features dancers, choreographers, and dance companies in new york. He has produced 600 episodes so far, and counting.

Sandella Malloy, Co-Founder and Artistic Director

For over fifteen years, Sandella has created new and innovative works that fuse African dance with other world dance forms. She seeks to present the strong social and cultural values of Africa in a modern artistic context. Sandella’s choreography has been presented at numerous venues in the United States and abroad. She is well known for her high-energy and innovative dance style, and is frequently sought after to teach classes and workshops to children and adults in dance schools, programs and conferences. In addition to her artistic work, Sandella is also a Registered Nurse and married to Frank Malloy, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Harambee.

 

Frankie Malloy, Musical Director

In addition to being the newly appointed Musical Director, Frankie is an extraordinary musician, performer, composer. He was given his first drum when he was 2 years old and from there began his journey into the musical world. Frankie attended the Music School of America in New York City, where he studied classical piano from 1st to 8th grade. Frankie then attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, where he studied what became his true passion; percussion. Frankie plays numerous percussive instruments including djembe, congas, balaphone, xylophone, timpani, and drum set. His performance experience is vast, national, and international, performing with many groups that include Harambee, Batoto Yetu, Jamal Jackson Dance Company, Forces of Nature Dance Theater, and Laroque Bey Dance Company.

 

Darian Parker, Assistant Artistic Director

Darian has been a dancer with the Harambee Dance Company since January of 2006. his membership from the very beginning has been a tremendous asset to the company. He is the ultimate professional; a role model, leader, and favorite among dancers. For the Artistic Director, Sandella, he is a principal dancer, extraordinary talent and gift on the Harambee stage.
